On September 6th in Sofia, marking 140 years since the establishment of the first diplomatic relations of Bulgaria and 15 years of Bulgaria in NATO, for the fifth consecutive time in Sofia was held a marathon (relay-race) marathon, organized by the Youth Sports Club "Sofia - Europe". The sporting event was under the patronage of the Embassy of Japan in Bulgaria and the start was given by the Ambassador of Japan to Bulgaria - His Excellency Masato Waktanabe.
On the day when Bulgarians celebrate the Union of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia, children and adults from more than 100 teams participated in the relay-race marathon in Sofia. In addition to professional athletes, many amateurs participated in the competition. Euroins Bulgaria employees, as well as Euroins Ukraine and European Travel Insurance - Ukraine employees joined the marathon and arrived especially for the event. Representatives of the Management and Supervisory Board of Eurohold Bulgaria and Euroins Insurance Group also took part in the marathon.
The Sofia Ekiden Marathon is being held to promote the relay-race in Bulgaria. It is called "Ekiden" marathon from the Japanese characters "eki" - point, and "dan" – broadcast, and supports the team spirit and game. Relay marathons are extremely emotional and are one of the most popular athletics competitions in the world. In different countries, these runs have a different name, but the organizers of the Bulgarian race prefer the classic "Ekiden" - as a token of respect to the Japanese tradition. For the first time, the relay marathon is held in Japan.
