The Sofia Ekiden Marathon is being held to promote the relay-race in Bulgaria. Relay marathons are extremely emotional and are one of the most popular athletics competitions in the world. In different countries, these runs have a different name, but the organizers of the Bulgarian race prefer the classic "Ekiden" - as a token of respect to the Japanese tradition. For the first time, the relay marathon is held in Japan.
